Het bewaren van herinneringen (monumenten) – tegen historisch revisionisme
De herinnering aan de gemeenschappelijke antifascistische strijd van de volkeren en militaire onderdelen van de anti-Hitler coalitie is een permanente taak van de FIR en haar lid federaties. In verschillende Europese landen, met name de Baltische staten, Polen, Oekraïne en in sommige landen van het voormalige Joegoslavië, zien we verschillende politieke en sociale pogingen om de antifascistische herinneringen te vervalsen. Monumenten van de antifascistische strijd worden vernietigd of zelfs heringewijd; voormalige collaborateurs van de SS worden erkend als vrijheidsstrijders” en zelfs groepen in het Europees Parlement beschrijven de collaborateurs als “vrijheidsstrijders” tegen het ”totalitarisme’, op 23 augustus. In deze context herhalen we onze veroordeling van deschandalige resolutie van het Europees Parlement van 19 september 2019. Dergelijke pogingen proberen de nazisme gelijk te stellen aan het communisme. In dezelfde lijn moeten de misdaden van de nazi-fascistische agressie in de Tweede Wereldoorlog ookin verband worden gebracht met de USSR. We verzetten ons tegen deze pogingen van historisch revisionisme en we zijner trots op dat in al die landen veteranen en antifascistische groepen blijven vechten voor de historische waarheid en de herdenkingsplaatsen verdedigen die gewijd zijn aan de bevrijding van het nazi-fascisme en aan de bevrijders.
De taak van de FIR en haar lid federaties blijft het bewaren van de historische herinnering van het verzet van de volkeren, van de vrouwen en mannen die hun leven hebben opgeofferd, die vochten in de gelederen van de anti-Hitler coalitie, voor hun overtuigingen of die het slachtoffer werden van andere redenen in de concentratie- en vernietigingskampen.
Dit is echter niet alleen een historisch perspectief. De herinnering verdedigen is vechten tegen alle rechtse pogingen in de respectievelijke landen. We zien in alle Europese landen en andere delen van de wereld dat extreemrechtse groeperingen actief zijn om de geschiedenis te veranderen om hun politieke invloed te versterken.
De nalatenschap van de antifascistische strijd, geconcentreerd in de Eed van Buchenwald, het manifest van
Mauthausen en andere documenten is de basis van de antifascistische vernieuwing van staten – gedocumenteerd in grondwetten en andere vormen van staatsopbouw.
De erfenis van het verzet betekent ook het verdedigen van zulke antifascistische grondwetten en fundamenten.
Het doorgeven van de ervaringen van verzetsstrijders en slachtoffers aan huidige en toekomstige generaties is een van de belangrijkste taken van onze organisaties en we zijn voortdurend op zoek naar beste praktijken en nieuwe ideeën om de huidige generaties te bereiken met onze historische ervaringen.
We werken vooral samen met gedenkplaatsen in kampen, met archieven en historische instellingen en antifascistische initiatieven die geschiedenis overbrengen. Uitstekende voorbeelden van dit werk zijn de tentoonstelling Europees verzet tegen nazisme” en de internationale jongerenbijeenkomsten, zoals die in 2025 opnieuw zal worden gehouden in Memorial Buchenwald.

Preserving memories – against historical revisionism
The memory of the common anti-fascist struggle of the peoples and military parts of the
anti-Hitler coalition is a permanent task of the FIR and its member federations. In several
European countries, notably the Baltic States, Poland, Ukraine and in some countries of
the former Yugoslavia, we see various political and social attempts to falsify the antifascist
memories. Monuments of the anti-fascist struggle are destroyed or even rededicated;
former collaborators of the SS are recognized as "freedom fighters" and even groups in
the European Parliament are actors of trying to establish a "solemn ceremony against
totalitarianism" on 23 August. In this context we renew our condemnation of the
scandalous resolution of the European Parliament of 19 September 2019. Such attempts
trying to equalize the Nazi-barbarism with all socialist ways in various European countries.
In the same line the crimes of the Nazi-fascist aggression in the WWII should be also
linked with the USSR. We oppose those attempts of historical revisionism and we are
proud that in all those countries veterans and antifascist groups keep on fighting for the
historical truth, defending such memorial places dedicated to the liberation from Nazi-
fascism and to the liberators.
The task of the FIR and its member federations remains to preserve the historical memory
of the resistance of the peoples, of the women and men who sacrificed their lives, who
fought in the ranks of the anti-Hitler coalition, for their convictions or who were victims from
any other reasons in the concentration and extermination camps.
However, this is not only a historical perspective. To defend memory is to fight against all
right wing attempts in the respective countries. We can see in all European countries and
other parts of the world that far right groups are active to change history to strengthen their
political influence.
The legacy of the antifascist fight focused in the Oath of Buchenwald, the manifest of
Mauthausen and other documents is the basis of the antifascist renewing of states –
documented in constitutions and other state building forms. To preserve the legacy of the
resistance means also to defend such antifascist constitutions and fundaments.
Passing the experiences of resistance fighters and victims on to present and future
generations is one of the most important tasks of our organizations and we are constantly
looking for best practices and new ideas to reach today’s generations with our historical
experiences.
We cooperate particularly with camps’ memorials, with archives and historical institutions
and antifascist initiatives which convey history. Outstanding examples of this work are the
exhibition "European resistance against Nazism" and the international youth meetings,
such the one that will be held again 2025 in Memorial Buchenwald, documenting the
impressive forms of transferring history to the young generations.
